Rushaga gorilla trekking sector : The Rushaga region is located in the southern portion of Bwindi, an impenetrable national park famous for its tourism heritage for safeguarding the critically endangered “mountain gorillas” type of wildlife. It is one of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park’s four sectors. The park is home to the 400 wild mountain gorillas that still live there today; the Rushaga sector is home to five of the largest gorilla families. The park is a tribute to these magnificent creatures.

WHY IT IS RECOMMENDED TO TRAVEL IN THIS AREA

When visiting Rushaga, you can see the volcanoes mountains in the distance, but the finest views are of the Virunga, Gahinga, and Muhavura. It’s an incredibly stunning sight to behold. You can also see “Lake Bunyonyi,” which is the deepest crater lake in Africa.

You will be astounded by the landscape of this area as you drive there; the hills and valleys will astound you, and you’ll also get to see the stunning Kisoro district, which is referred to as the Switzerland of Uganda.

Since only 40 permits are sold each day and only eight people are permitted to trek with each habituated gorilla family—four people are grouped to carry our habuation in this region, making it the only sector with two haburated gorilla families—it is very easy to book your permit in advance due to the variety of habituated gorilla families in this sector.

Before receiving a permit, it is advisable that you inquire about the gorilla family that interests you. Depending on your level of physical fitness, you may be able to trek more than one family in this region as the families are spread out across different areas. The rangers are aware of each family’s location.

In contrast to other places where the lodges are owned by foreign investors, the Rushaga region boasts a variety of lodges that are all owned by members of the local community. While trekking in Rushaga, you can stay the night at one of the lodges, which include Nshongi Gorilla Camp, Rushaga Gorilla Camp, Gorilla Safari Lodge, and Rushaga Gorilla Havens Lodge.
