Kahungye Gorilla Family
Kahungye Gorilla Family; One of the ten habituated Mountain Gorilla Groups protected by the impenetrable forests of Bwindi, the Kahungye Gorilla Family is located in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
In a nutshell, one of the forests in Uganda‘s Southwest is the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It appears that there are four regions in the forest: Buhoma, Nkuringo, Rushaga, and Ruhija. Each of these regions is home to a troop of mountain gorillas.
The Rushaga sector, which is also the only one where gorillas in Uganda become habituated, is one of the most fascinating areas to follow mountain gorillas.
Even after a breakup a few years ago that resulted in the creation of a new mountain gorilla family known as the Busingye Gorilla group, the Kahungye Gorilla group still has a substantial population.
The family was initially sighted on a hill in Rushaga, which is where the name Kahungye originates. There are now 13 members, 3 of whom are Silverbacks. This is only an estimate, though, as it fluctuates depending on a lot of things, like as gorilla deaths, new members joining the group, members departing to join other groups, or even just new babies born within the group.

After a successful acclimatization period, this group was allowed for gorilla trekking in 2011. Regrettably, they disbanded in less than a year to form the Busingye Gorilla Group. There were three Silverbacks and 27 members of the family prior to the drama of misunderstandings and separation.
Currently serving as the group’s leader is “Gwigi” the silverback. In Ugandan Rukiga, one of the original languages, the term Gwigi means “door.”
You may enjoy an exciting gorilla trekking adventure and see the Mountain Gorilla family as they go about their daily lives for no more than an hour.
