Visit Lake Muhazi Rwanda’s Hidden Treasure
Visit Lake Muhazi Rwanda‘s Hidden Treasure: About 40 kilometers east of Kigali, the country’s capital, is the stunning Lake Muhanzi, which has a lovely, curving shoreline that is worth exploring on your Rwanda safari, especially on the weekends. The charming, laid-back atmosphere of the lakeside neighborhood makes it the ideal getaway from the bustling, cacophonous city life.
Generally shallow, Lake Muhazi is a very long lake that stretches 40 km to its eastern coast, just a short distance from the famous Akagera National Park, across a flooded valley. Actually, the road that leads to Nyagatare goes by this lake’s eastern bank and provides a pleasant place for travelers to stop. Before continuing your journey, you might decide to stop for lunch or just relax and take in the refreshing breeze on Lake Muhazi’s eastern coast.
The lakeside is surrounded with a number of quaint towns and lively music-playing local taverns. You can observe how the locals there enjoy their free time by visiting any of these. You might also decide to fish there or take some time to observe the different waters along the coasts.
Gahini Anglican Cathedraw
Gahini village, located on the hilltop opposite the eastern beach, is a pleasant area to experience Rwandan culture. You can witness the residents praying in the historic Gahini Anglican Cathedral if you happen to be in this town on a Sunday. Don’t be shocked if you encounter herds of long-horned Inyambo cows; the majority of the residents of this town and the nearby villages are farmers or fishermen. A visit to Lake Muhazi would not be complete without a boat ride on the lake, either for fishing or bird watching.
For those of you who enjoy animals, keep an eye out for the Spotted-necked otter as well as a number of birds, such as the Malachite kingfisher, African fish eagle, pied kingfisher, and swamp flycatcher.
From Lake Muhazi, a number of streams flow into the vast area that is primarily made up of agricultural communities. Driving a 4WD safari vehicle makes it easy to navigate the less-traveled, filthy dumpy road and take in the stunning terraced farmlands on the hillsides that descend to the water’s edge. Beautiful views of the lake may be seen along this drive.
Near this lake are two sizable villages, Gahini and Rwesero, both of which have a number of guesthouses from where you may plan a variety of water sports, such as fishing, boat excursions, and bird viewing.
If you want to swim, you can choose to do so in the shallow waters near the shore, but proceed with caution.
The neighborhood eateries here serve a wide range of delectable regional cuisines that will give you a genuine flavor of Rwanda‘s diverse culinary basket along with a selection of refreshing beverages. For those who enjoy both history and religion, we suggest a visit to the historic Gahini Anglican Cathedral, which was built of brick and is thought to have been built in 1975. It still stands tall above other Gahini rooftops today. This cathedral receives hundreds and thousands of pilgrims each year, including local parishioners.
