Agashya Gorilla Family

Agashya Gorilla Family: Also referred to as Group 13 (thirteen), this family is easily recognized by its number, which also serves as its name. There are currently around 25 members in the group, including one silverback, 12 females, 7 newborns, and 3 juveniles. They take pleasure in the PNV’s verdant vegetation.

The original 13 individuals who formed the group at the time of their habituation are the reason behind the group 13 name. Before being overthrown by Agashya, Nyakairima was the dominant force in Group 13. Additionally, the group’s name had to change to “Agashya” when Agashya took over. Group 13 is still its alternate name, nevertheless. “Agashya” translates to “News” in Kinyarwanda.

Several times before winning the hotly won battle and seizing the group’s leadership, Agashya evaluated Nyakairima’s reliability. The family’s size increased from 12 to 25 thanks to Nyakairima.

Agashya is extremely concerned about his safety and would always lead the party up onto the elevated terrain if he feels threatened. They are occasionally even concerned about certain gorilla trekkers.

This group remains in close proximity to the Sabyinyo Gorilla Group. Both of them reside on the slopes of Mount Sabyinyo, one of the most magnificent of the Virunga Volcanoes.
