Bitukura Gorilla Group

Bitukura Gorilla Group; The Ruhija area of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, located in Southwest Uganda, is home to the Bitukura Gorilla family. This turns out to be the most populous group of mountain gorillas in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It had 24 members at first, but later on, it was down to 14, with 4 Silverbacks.

The group’s second-youngest silverback, Ndahura, has been leading for the past few years, succeeding Karamusizi, the previous leader.

Regretfully, the 40-year-old silverback’s life came to an end, ending Karamusizi’s reign of supremacy and dignity.

The Bitukura Gorilla Group

The family was initially seen near a river in the woodland known as Bitukura, hence the name of the gorilla group, Bitukura Gorilla Group. This family began to settle in 2007; however, in 2008, the area was made available to tourists. Compared to the minimum suggested two years, this group’s training and habituation took only 15 months, making it one of the shortest ever.

Because of their strong relationship with the Kyaguriro Gorilla Group, which they frequently visit, the Bitukura Gorilla Group’s habituation never took as long. This family is close-knit, content, and calm despite the death of a few members.

The number of members in this family has grown thanks to the addition of new members in 2013 and the recent birth of Ruhara. The Bitukura gorilla group was overjoyed to welcome a new youngster, which Ndahura, the family leader, is prepared to sacrifice his own life to protect.

Since you have to arrive at the park headquarters in time for the pre-briefing meeting, you must obtain Rushaga gorilla trekking permits in order to trek with the Bitukura troop.

Bitukura Gorilla Group welcomes up to eight guests per day.
