Nshongi Gorilla Group

Nshongi Gorilla Group; One of the ten habituated gorilla groups living in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the Nshongi gorilla group. The group is located in Bwindi’s Rushaga sector. One of the forests in Uganda‘s Southwest is the Impenetrable Bwindi Forest National Park.

It is a component of Africa’s national parks residing in the three nations that make up the world’s mountain gorilla population, which also includes Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. As the largest ape in the monkey family, mountain gorillas are an endangered species.

After all, baboons and chimpanzees are actually referred to as our cousins because they share 98% of our DNA.

The Nshongi gorilla group was given its name from the Rushaga section river where the group was initially observed. The phrase “Omushongi Gwoboki,” a Rukiga dialect word for “honey,” is the source of the name “Nshongi.” The word described the rich tone of the “river,” which was thought to be reminiscent of “honey.”

The Nshongi gorilla family

The silverback was given the name “Nshongi” in honor of the group commander at the time.

Since the organization was founded in 2009, its size has given it distinct personalities. With 36 members, the group was one of the biggest in Rushaga when it came to habituation. The number of members in the organization fluctuates based on the number of deaths, new people entering, and long-standing members even though it was the largest.

Despite the large number of silverbacks in the group, the seven black backs and three silverbacks coexisted peacefully as a family and showed no evidence of dominance struggles.

The unity within the group was demonstrated by the fact that Nshongi, the dominant silverback, was not the oldest silverback in the family. But in July 2010, the group split into two families: the 10 members established a family with Mishaya the silverback, while the Nshogi group remained with 26 members, including 4 silverbacks.

Every day, tourists travel to Uganda to trek the Nshongi gorilla group. The Nshongi gorilla group is located in a vast area where it is possible to see a variety of primates, as well as numerous birds and butterflies that call the rich dense rain forest of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park home.
