Things To Do And See At Lake Muhazi In Rwanda
Things To Do And See At Lake Muhazi In Rwanda: One of the few lakes in Rwanda having a Kinyarwanda name is Lake Muhazi. The eastern region of Rwanda is home to this slender, shallow lake. This is also referred to as a flooded valley lake, and it is located to the east and west. The concrete dam at the west end of this lake was built in 1999 to replace the earth dam that had previously been there. Additionally, this lake discharges its water into the Nyabugogo River, which flows south of Kigali City before joining the “Nyabarongo River.”
How to Get to Muhazi Lake
The three main roads in Rwanda provide easy access to this lake: the Gatuna road, which crosses the lake’s western shore; the Kyonza road, which runs parallel to the lake’s southern shore; and the Kagitumba road, which reaches the lake’s shore at a distance of roughly 3.8 kilometers. The country’s five provinces—Kigali province, the eastern province, the northern province, the Rwamagama district, Kayonza, and the Gatsibo district in the north—are all covered by Lake Muhazi, which is 60 km long and 5 km wide.
Observing Birds
Malachite king fishers, pied king fishers, African fish eagles, arrow-marked, black-lured, swamp flycatchers, village weavers, African paradise fly catchers, bronze, scarlet-chested, white-breasted cormorants, yellow-fronted canaries, yellow-billed storks, open-bill, cattle egrets, and grey-crowned cranes are among the many bird species found in the lake.
Camping on the beach and fishing
Numerous fish species are also present, such as tilapia and marbled lung fish. Due to its two main resorts—the Seeds of Peace Center, which has lodging options and a beach—this lake is also well-known for tourism. Visitors to Rwanda utilize these as stops on their way to and from Akagera National Park, which is known for its wildlife. It also provides boating, fishing, and bird watching. Travelers can find camping facilities at the Rwesero beach, which is situated on the park’s northeastern edges.
