The Buhoma sector is one of the four gorilla trekking sectors in the Northern region of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Since it is home to the oldest gorilla family, Mubare, which became habituated in 1993, Buhoma is the most well-known and often visited gorilla sector. Four habituated gorilla families—the Habinyanja, Rushegura, Mubare, and Katwe gorilla families—live in the Buhoma area and are regularly accessible for daily hiking. In addition to gorilla trekking, the Buhoma sector provides tourists with other exciting activities such as;

Observing birds/Bird watching                                                                                                            One of the best places to go birding in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the Buhoma Sector, which is home to over 360 species of documented birds, including migratory, forest, and 23 endemic species of the Albertine Rift. An expert park guide will accompany you on your bird watching excursions, helping you to identify various bird species such as the African green broadbill, white-throated green bull, cape wagtail, pink-footed puffback, red-headed bluebill, great blue turaco, Waller’s starling, klaas’s cuckoo, African blue flycatcher, barred long-tailed cuckoo, grey-crowned crane, and blue-headed sunbird, among others.

Experience of Batwa culture                                                                                                                      A fun activity in the Buhoma sector is the Batwa Cultural Experience, which gives you a chance to talk to the Batwa and pygmies who lived in the Bwindi Forest before it was declared a national park. Experience the culture of the Batwa people by learning about their history, way of life, how to hunt and gather, how to make fire with sticks, how they used plants for food and medicine, and more. You may also take part in traditional dances, songs, and dramas.

The ideal time to travel to the Buhoma region                                                                      Although Buhoma Sector can be visited year-round, the best time to go is during the dry season, which falls in the months of June, July, August, September, December, January, and February. This is because during this time the national park receives less or no rainfall, making the trails for gorilla trekking and nature walks passable and the vegetation thin, allowing you to get clear views of various wildlife species.
